Coral Gardening is at the heart of what we do at Corals for Conservation. We collect coral fragments from reefs that have historically undergone regular, extended periods of high temperature exposure. These robust and more thermally adapted colonies act as source populations to be propagated in nurseries and genebanks.  Nurseries are carefully monitored for coral health and growth. When the corals are large enough we translocate them to cooler degraded reefs in patches of genetically diverse corals.  These outplanting patches then serve as fish habitat, attract juvenile corals, and are able to reproduce populating the reef with thermally tolerant corals able to survive increasing sea temperatures due to climate change.

Reefs of Hope

Learn the basic skills and knowledge required to grow your local reef with super corals in the years to follow! After completing this workshop you will be able to improve coral health and increase populations using A-frames, fish houses, nurseries, and gene-banks for super corals in your local community's tabu area.

* Science background helpful but not required

Reefs of Hope

Professional

ADVANCED

Learn the ecology and science that drives the full Reefs of Hope Paradigm for coral-focused climate adaptation in the face of global warming. Training for monitoring and reporting on reefs, nurseries, translocation, and gene-banks is included as well as a the skills and knowledge required to enter the tourism workforce in a marine professional capacity.

Creating new coral nurseries and establishing Traditional Tabu areas in local communities and coastal regions requires allocating an area of no fishing. However as fishing is still a massive part of traditional Pacific Island economies and cultures, creating no fishing zones can result in a loss of income and protein for communities. Corals for Conservation seeks to offset these losses by providing additional training workshops in the pursuit of sustainable alternative livelihoods that may be able to produce supplemental income and resources for those who elect to establish coral gardens and tabu areas in their communities.

Alternative Livelihood

Workshops

All of our alternative livelihoods workshops are run out of the Teitei Homestay and permaculture farm north of Sigatoka, Fiji. If you are interested in visiting the homestay without undertaking any of our training workshops, check out the teitei homestay website by clicking the Teitei fiji image to make a booking

Permaculture

Visit Dr. Austin and his family at the Teitei Homestay (North of Sigatoka) for an interactive and engaging experience exploring a working permaculture farm. Learn the scientific and traditional knowledge used to maintain the property and its diverse animals and vegetation.

Guided Tour and Training

Cocoa Farming

Fiji's Climate is ideal for cultivating Cocoa. This workshop will teach you all the necessary knowledge and skills you will need to establish, harvest, dry, and process your own cocoa. Also learn more about how to begin selling or exporting your beans or chocolate once you're up and running.

Chocolate Production

Happy Chickens

Chickens are a valuable and potentially sustainable resource available for local communities and farmers. happy, thriving chickens can provide eggs, meat, and livestock to supplement local diets and income. Learn how to build productive and healthy flocks with minimal resources.
